Volvo has announced that it will base all its future cars on the same fundamental core of systems, modules, software and hardware, called the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, stating with the new EX90.
The firm states that this new approach will define its future, channelling all its engineering efforts into one direction: Making cars that get better with time. The single tech and software base that contains all modules and functionalities that Volvo will use in its future product lineup and can be configured in many different ways so each new car will be a selection, or a subset, of blocks from the Superset tech stack.
Following this announcement, the firm has also revealed that this means its upcoming new ES90 sedan will benefit from the development already put into the EX90, and that the work done for the ES90 will carry on - both into the development of the EX60 coming after it, as well as improving the EX90 already in the hands of our customers, and so on.
This EX60 will additionally be underpinned by a new electric technology base, called SPA3. SPA3 builds on many of the building blocks of SPA2, but will offer enhanced core computing capability, and is said to be far more scalable than its predecessor, allowing cars both larger than the EX90 and smaller than the EX20 to be built, all while using the same technology base.
Volvo states that its Torslanda plant is already preparing for production of its SPA3-based cars.
